An exciting leadership opportunity is available for an experienced and motivated Medical Physicist to join the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre (MCTC) as 'Deputy Director (MCTC), Medical Physics'. This senior position offers the chance to contribute to a progressive, technology-driven radiation oncology service, strongly integrated across clinical practice, research, and innovation. Reporting to the Director of Medical Physics, the role leads the day-to-day operations of the physics team at MCTC while contributing strategically across SWSLHD Cancer Services, which operate under shared protocols, policies and procedures, and common Oncology Information and Treatment Planning systems. The position also plays a key role in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions, commissioning initiatives, and ongoing service development.

Are You the Right Fit?
Applicants will hold ACPSEM certification/accreditation in Radiation Oncology and demonstrate strong leadership capability within a clinical environment. Proven experience managing teams to deliver safe, high-quality services is essential, along with the ability to identify risks and implement strategies to remove, control, or mitigate them. The role requires experience overseeing both small and large-scale projects while maintaining excellence in clinical service delivery. A strong background in research, development, and commissioning projects is required, along with expertise across multiple areas of radiotherapy physics and advanced knowledge in one or more treatment sites or techniques. This position suits a senior professional ready to lead, innovate, and influence the future direction of cancer services.


Selection Criteria

  • To be appointed at a level of Senior Medical Physics Specialist the applicant must have at least the level of experience meeting the requirements specified in the Award for progression to this grade.
  • A postgraduate degree and Bachelors degrees in physics, medical physics or equivalent discipline from a tertiary institution in Australia or equivalent from overseas.
  • Certification in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics or Radiotherapy Equipment Commissioning and Quality Assurance from the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), or placement on the ACPSEM Radiation Oncology Register. International candidates eligible for registration by the ACPSEM may also apply.
  • Maintain a current NSW Environment Protection Authority Radiation User Licence for Medical Physics (types IA29 & S29).
  • Briefly describe your most significant experience in a leadership role. Based on this, what do you expect to be the most challenging and rewarding aspects of this position?
  • Identify a specific junior physicist or registrar you have mentored or supervised. What was a distinct technical or professional gap they struggled with, and what specific coaching framework did you apply to help them achieve independent competency?
  • Give an example of a time when you had to advocate for a physics-driven safety or quality initiative that initially faced resistance from department executives or radiation oncologists. What strategy did you use to build consensus?
