At UGL, we work on complex, real-world power system projects that directly impact critical infrastructure across Australia. We combine deep engineering expertise with practical delivery to design, integrate, and commission systems that utilities rely on every day.
We are currently seeking a Senior Secondary Systems Engineer to join our Power Utilities team in Brisbane. This role offers the opportunity to become a key contributor within a highly experienced engineering team, delivering advanced automation and secondary systems solutions.

About the Role
You will join a multi-disciplinary engineering team delivering automation and secondary systems across the full project lifecycle-from concept, design, and integration through to testing and commissioning.
This is a hands-on engineering role where your understanding of utility environments (e.g. substations, control centres, field comms) will be directly applied to real project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
Develop detailed designs and specifications for automation and secondary systems
Interface with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders on design and technical decisions
Support delivery across all phases: design, integration, testing, and commissioning
Technical Scope
You will work across a broad and familiar utility technology stack:
Substation automation & control systems
RTU, PLC, HMI, and IED/relay integration
SCADA systems and protocols (DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101/104, Modbus, Conitel)
IEC 61850 design, engineering, and integration
Control schemes (e.g. load shedding, AVR, interlocking, plant automation)
Control centre and field communications integration
Industrial networking (station LAN/WAN design, switching, routing)
Cybersecurity considerations aligned to utility environments
SCADA and control system testing and commissioning

About You
You are likely coming from a utility, OEM, or consultancy environment and want to expand your exposure while staying close to the systems you know well.

Essential
Engineering degree (Electrical or similar)
Experience within power utilities or substation/control system environments
Strong understanding of SCADA, automation, and control systems used in utilities
Familiarity with utility standards, practices, and operational expectations
Highly Regarded
Experience with IEC 61850 environments
Exposure to substation or control centre integration projects
Commissioning or field experience

What You'll Gain
Broader technical exposure across different utilities, standards, and designs
Career progression into technical leadership or project engineering roles
Opportunity to influence designs rather than just review and maintain them
A strong team of experienced engineers with deep utility backgrounds
Flexible working arrangements and supportive team culture
