Based at Mount Druitt Hospital, this unique role sits within a dedicated team committed to improving access to palliative and supportive care services for Aboriginal people and their families. Working across Western Sydney, you will partner with Aboriginal communities, healthcare providers and community organisations to strengthen culturally safe care and improve end of life experiences for Aboriginal patients and their loved ones.

What you'll be doing
As an Aboriginal Health Education Officer - Palliative Care, you will play a vital role in improving awareness, access and engagement with palliative and supportive care services for Aboriginal people. You will provide cultural, social and emotional support to patients and families while helping healthcare services deliver culturally respectful and responsive care.


Key responsibilities include:

Supporting Aboriginal patients and families to access palliative, supportive and end of life care services across a range of healthcare settings

Providing social, emotional and cultural support throughout the palliative care journey

Delivering education and health promotion activities that increase community understanding of palliative and end of life care services

Building and maintaining strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, organisations and service providers to enhance service access and outcomes

Working collaboratively with healthcare teams to promote culturally safe practices and improve the quality of care delivered to Aboriginal people

Essential Criteria:

Qualification: Relevant qualifications in social sciences, health or related field

Selection Criteria:

1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

2. Relevant qualifications in social sciences, health or related field

3. Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal communities, families in relation to grief and loss and social and emotional wellbeing

4. Experience in the provision of support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, families, carers, and communities

5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with health professionals and other staff across a range of settings and disciplines

6. Ability to build and maintain successful partnerships with relevant partners including government and non-government organisations and community based organisations.

7. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team with good organisational, written and verbal communication skills.

8. Current Drivers licence valid in NSW and the willingness and ability to travel
