Job Description
About the role
We are seeking a Race Starter to Race Starter to oversee the safe and efficient starting of thoroughbred races, trials and jump outs across Metropolitan, Provincial and selected Country venues.
In this role, you will:
- Start races, trials and jump outs in accordance with official protocols and guidelines.
- Train, accredit and support barrier and starting staff across WA.
- Work closely with Stewards and industry stakeholders to review and establish starting procedures.
- Conduct horse identity verification and equipment check to ensure runners are presented correctly to race.
- Make recommendations to Stewards on disciplinary and remedial matters relating to horses.
- Oversee health and safety for all persons at the barriers.
- Liaise with Perth Racing and Provincial Clubs to ensure appropriate barrier staffing levels for race meetings and trials.
- Attend industry forums and provide advice on starting matters.
Qualifications
About you
- Extensive experience in a similar role
- Extensive experience in thoroughbred horse handling
- Excellent practical horse handling skills, including awareness, care and supervision of horses
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of thoroughbred horses
- Extensive knowledge of racehorse gear and equipment
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the racing and wagering industry
- Extensive knowledge of Rules of Racing
- Ability to maintain control of thoroughbred horses and riders in pressure situations
- Basic computer literacy skills - Microsoft Office / Windows environment
- Completion of Year 10
- Current Senior First Aid Certificate
