Teacher Special Education - Kanahooka High School
Kanahooka High School is a comprehensive secondary school located on the lands of the Wadi Wadi people of the Dharawal Nation in the Southern Illawarra region. The school has a student population of 598, with 22.58% of students identifying as having an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background and 4.18% of students from a non-English speaking background.
The school is committed to inclusive, student-centred educational practices and fostering a culture of high expectations, engagement and achievement. Kanahooka High School provides a broad range of academic, cultural, sporting, creative and vocational opportunities, supported by a dedicated and collaborative staff.
The school's Support Unit currently comprises ten specialist classes and will expand to eleven classes in 2027. The unit includes Autism (AU), Mild Intellectual Disability (IM), Moderate Intellectual Disability (IO), Multi-Categorical (MC) and Intensive Learning Support (ILS) classes. Staff work collaboratively with students, families, external agencies and community partners to provide personalised learning, wellbeing and transition support, ensuring all students are known, valued and supported to achieve their potential.
- Approval to teach Special Education and/or demonstrated experience supporting students with complex behavioural and emotional needs, trauma, Autism, and intellectual disability.
- Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate differentiated, data-informed teaching and learning programs using explicit teaching, evidence-based practice and high expectations to improve students' academic, social, emotional and behavioural outcomes.
- Demonstrated effective classroom management skills that create safe, inclusive and engaging learning environments while supporting the diverse learning, behavioural and wellbeing needs of students.
- Highly developed communication, organisational and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build and maintain positive, collaborative partnerships with students, parents/carers, colleagues and external agencies to support student learning, wellbeing and engagement.
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
