The purpose of Risk & Legal is to help our business partners succeed via valued risk and compliance advice, whilst safeguarding UniSuper through effective controls assurance and oversight. The Legal team comprises two teams: Corporate Legal and Investments Legal. Both teams support the General Counsel.

The role
As a Senior Legal Counsel within Corporate Legal, you will provide specialist legal advice on insurance and claims-related matters, assessments, complaints and disputes. You will apply your expertise to help protect UniSuper's legal position while supporting high-quality outcomes for members and the business. Furthermore, you will:
- Provide clear, practical and commercially aware legal advice on insurance and claims-related matters, complaints, disputes, superannuation law, financial services law, trust law, governance matters and the UniSuper trust deed
- Manage complaints, disputes and insurance claims matters end-to-end, including developing dispute resolution strategies, drafting legal documents and representing UniSuper in dispute resolution forums
- Draft and review recommendations, committee and Board papers, legal submissions, settlement agreements and other legal documentation
- Respond to business queries and proactively identify legal issues requiring consideration or advice
- Build and strengthen relationships with internal and external stakeholders, identifying opportunities to improve collaboration and engagement
- Maintain knowledge of relevant legislation, case law and industry developments, sharing expertise through guidance, training and capability building
About you
You are an experienced legal professional with strong expertise in insurance and claims-related matters and a genuine passion for superannuation and improving retirement outcomes for members. You combine sound legal judgement with strong advocacy, stakeholder engagement and problem-solving capabilities, and also bring:
- Significant post-admission legal experience, ideally within a law firm or in-house legal team, with confidence managing a busy, high-volume file load
- Strong knowledge of insurance and claims-related legal matters, assessments, decisions and external dispute resolution frameworks and strategies
- Experience in superannuation insurance claims and litigation, or strong personal injury litigation experience with a genuine interest in superannuation
- Strong written and verbal advocacy skills with the ability to influence others and present compelling legal arguments
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively, meet team goals and deadlines, and maintain quality
- Strong interpersonal, communication and stakeholder engagement skills, combined with a pragmatic, outcomes-focused approach
