The Director Medical Services a member of the Sutherland Hospital Executive, working in partnership with the General Manager and Executive colleagues to provide strategic leadership, operational oversight and professional medical leadership across the Hospital. The role contributes to the overall leadership and management of the facility, supporting organisational priorities and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality and sustainable healthcare services.


Reporting to the General Manager, the DMS is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of Medical Services, the Medical Workforce Unit and the Clinical Governance portfolio. This includes oversight of medical workforce planning, recruitment, credentialing, deployment, wellbeing, performance, industrial matters and budget management, ensuring a capable, engaged and sustainable medical workforce that meets current and future service requirements. The DMS provides executive leadership for clinical governance, quality and safety systems, accreditation, clinical risk management, complaints management, open disclosure, medico-legal and coronial matters, and supports the continuous improvement of patient outcomes and service quality.

The position plays a key role in maintaining excellence in patient care, education and research while leading the medical workforce through periods of organisational change. The role requires an experienced and visible senior medical leader with the capability to build strong clinical partnerships, foster engagement and professional culture, and ensure services are delivered in accordance with NSW Health legislation, policy, governance requirements and the values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment.

The primary location of this position may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved by MDAAC to other facilities in SESLHD.

  1. Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide AHPRA Registration Number on application.
  2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators as provided for under the Staff Specialists (NSW) Award or actively working towards Fellowship. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development relevant to the specialty of Medical Administration.
  3. Demonstrated ability in developing, implementing and evaluating systems and processes to improve patient safety and ensure quality of care.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary clinical governance systems and processes associated with the provision of health care services.
  5. Demonstrated ability to communicate, consult and effectively negotiate with senior health professionals and senior executives and government agencies.
  6. Demonstrated high level of skill in analysis of complex medical policy and planning issues, formulating new approaches and developing comprehensive implementation and improvement strategies.
  7. Demonstrated successful experience in both the development and implementation of initiatives to improve the delivery of medical services.
  8. Demonstrated capacity to operate as a member of an Executive management team of a complex and integrated health service that provides primary and secondary service.
