Expression of Interest - European Train Control System (ETCS) Lead
UGL is seeking an experienced European Train Control System (ETCS) Lead to join our team on a major Sunshine Coast Rail Project. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated rail systems professional to play a key role in the delivery of ETCS enabling works, integration, testing, and commissioning of ETCS technology within a large-scale transport infrastructure project.
About the Role
As the ETCS Lead, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating all ETCS-related installation activities across the project lifecycle, from design review and systems integration up to testing, commissioning, and operational handover. You will provide technical leadership to ensure ETCS systems are installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project requirements, rail industry standards, and client requirements.
Working closely with the rail system delivery manager, engineering, construction, and subcontractor teams, you will lead the planning and execution of ETCS installation works while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the installation, and testing, of ETCS systems across the project.
Manage all ETCS-related activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, operational requirements, standards, and safety requirements.
Oversee review of ETCS designs, technical documentation, system requirements, and interface specifications.
Coordinate ETCS equipment suppliers, and construction teams to achieve project milestones and delivery objectives.
Manage critical interfaces between ETCS, telecommunications, power, track, rollingstock, operational systems, and wider rail infrastructure.
Monitor project progress and implement solutions to address technical, operational, and integration challenges.
Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with safety, quality, environmental, and rail accreditation requirements.
Review and approve testing, and validation, acceptance documentation.
Support procurement activities, supplier engagement, contract management, and subcontractor performance.
Lead risk assessments, hazards analyses, systems assurance activities, and technical workshops.
Provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development support to engineering and project teams.

Contribute to project reporting, forecasting, budgeting, schedule management, and project controls.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
A minimum of 10 years experience in the rail industry, with experience in signalling, train control, or ETCS systems.
Demonstrated experience delivering ETCS or Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems on major rail infrastructure projects.
Strong knowledge of ETCS architecture, trackside and onboard equipment, Radio Block Centres (RBC), balises, interlockings, communications systems, and systems integration principles.
Experience leading rail signalling and train control projects through design, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness phases.
Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate complex technical interfaces.
Experience with systems engineering, requirements management, configuration management, verification, and validation activities.
Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills.
Relevant engineering qualifications in signalling, systems engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunications, or a related discipline.
Knowledge of Australian and international rail signalling standards, ETCS specifications, and rail regulatory requirements.
