Engineering Standards & Excellence Lead

Westpac Group
Melbourne, VIC, Australia Full Time
Reference: 218_467287_70826

Create your best as an Engineering Standards & Excellence Lead.

What's the role?

Reporting to the Group Head of Engineering, you will play a key role in establishing and scaling Westpac's Engineering Practice. You will help define the standards, patterns, guardrails and ways of working that make great engineering easier to adopt across one of Australia's largest technology environments. This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who can bring credibility with engineers, influence senior stakeholders and turn complex engineering expectations into practical guidance that improves delivery, resilience, quality, productivity and customer outcomes. You will work across Delivery Units, Architecture, Cyber, Risk, Controls, platform teams and external partners to create practical engineering standards and reusable approaches that help teams deliver faster, safer and with greater confidence. This is a chance to influence how thousands of engineers build, run and improve technology across Westpac.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Define practical engineering standards, patterns and guardrails that set a clear bar for quality, resilience, security, maintainability and delivery effectiveness.
  • Create reusable playbooks, templates, paved roads and reference approaches that reduce duplication and make it easier for teams to do the right thing.
  • Partner with Engineering, Architecture, Cyber, Risk, Controls and platform teams to translate enterprise expectations into practical engineering guidance.
  • Lead initiatives that improve engineering effectiveness, developer experience, delivery flow, automation, testing, reliability and technical sustainability.
  • Support Delivery Unit leaders to identify engineering friction and turn it into practical improvement activity.
  • Help embed engineering standards and controls into tools, workflows and day-to-day delivery practices.
  • Use metrics such as DORA, flow, reliability, quality, defect trends, automation and developer experience to identify opportunities and tell a clear improvement story.
  • Build strong communities of senior engineers and practitioners who contribute to standards, patterns and continuous improvement.
  • Bring external insight, market practice and strategic partner input into Westpac's engineering uplift.
What do I need?

We're looking for a senior engineering leader or experienced technology practitioner who can operate across strategy, standards, delivery improvement and hands-on adoption. You will bring strong engineering judgement, practical influence and the ability to make complex topics clear and useful for teams.

You'll bring experience in:

  • Engineering leadership, software engineering, platform engineering, architecture, DevOps, engineering practices or technology transformation
  • Defining or adopting engineering standards, technical patterns, guardrails, lifecycle practices or reusable delivery approaches
  • Improving engineering effectiveness across teams, platforms or large technology environments
  • Working with modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, reliability engineering, secure-by-design, cloud, developer experience and AI-assisted engineering
  • Influencing senior engineering, architecture, product, delivery, risk and transformation stakeholders
  • Operating in complex, regulated environments where quality, resilience, security and risk matter
  • Turning ambiguity into clear direction, practical guidance and measurable outcomes
