Create your best future as an Engineering Craft & Capability Lead.
What's the role?
Reporting to the Group Head of Engineering, the Engineering Craft & Capability Lead will help establish and scale the Engineering Practice by creating the conditions for engineers to grow their craft, build future skills and apply new capability through hands-on engineering experiences. You will work across Engineering Practice, Delivery Units, senior engineering leaders, external partners and our People, Learning and Workforce Planning teams to make capability development practical, relevant and connected to how engineers learn, grow and deliver. As Catalyst continues to mature, this role will help strengthen the craft foundations required for product-aligned delivery, including modern software engineering, secure engineering, AI-assisted delivery, software delivery lifecycle improvement and platform engineering.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- You will turn engineering strategy and future skills needs into practical development priorities that help engineers build capability through doing, sharing and contributing.
- Define engineering craft and capability priorities that support Catalyst, modern engineering practices and Westpac's broader technology strategy.
- Create practical development mechanisms such as innovation time, technical spikes, hackathons, engineering events, mentoring and peer learning.
- Develop targeted certification and skills uplift programmes with People, Learning, technology vendors, hyper-scalers, engineering partners and industry bodies.
- Use Delivery Unit insight, practitioner feedback and engineering signals to identify priority capability gaps and future skills needs.
- Build and support engineering communities that help practitioners learn from each other across Delivery Units.
- Connect capability uplift to engineering outcomes such as delivery effectiveness, quality, resilience, productivity and developer experience.
- Provide clear insight and executive-level narrative on engineering craft, capability priorities, adoption and impact.
What do I need?
You will bring credibility with engineers, confidence with senior stakeholders and a practical understanding of how capability is built in complex technology environments.
Key skills and experience will include:
- Senior experience in engineering leadership, engineering capability, software engineering, platform engineering, technology transformation, developer experience or a related field.
- Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices and how they apply in regulated environments.
- Experience shaping capability uplift, certification programmes, communities of practice, applied learning or practitioner development mechanisms.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, engineering leaders, People, Learning, Workforce Planning and external partners.
- Strong appreciation of product-aligned delivery, persistent teams, Delivery Units and end-to-end engineering accountability.
- Experience or strong interest in AI-assisted engineering, DevOps, cloud, secure engineering, reliability, platform engineering or developer experience.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to turn complex capability topics into clear choices, recommendations and narratives.
