Research Officer/Senior Research Officer

The Opportunity

Our Translational Genetics Team focuses on providingmolecular analysis of genetic variants (gene mutations), to deliver early,accurate diagnosis and patient-specific treatments for children living withgenetic and rare diseases. The team applies CRISPR gene editing and stem celldisease modelling to interpret patient genetic variants, elucidate diseasemechanism, and identify effective treatments.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Research Officerto join our Translational Genetics Team to assist with the goal of improvingthe daily lives of rare disease patients. The research will involve performing experimentallaboratory work using high expertise laboratory techniques to investigategenetic variants in congenital heart disease. In this role you will also havethe opportunity to apply and develop skills in molecular biology, CRISPR geneediting, protein analysis, immunohistochemistry, RNA sequencing (bulk andsingle cell) and cardiac stem disease modelling (mesoderm, atrial,ventricular).

Theposition will support career development in research grant application, manuscriptpreparation, presentation of research at scientific forums, and student supervision.

Some of your specific responsibilities include:

• Perform CRISPR single-base gene editing in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and direct their differentiation into cardiomyocytes for disease modelling and genetic variant assessment.
  
• Apply next-generation sequencing techniques, including amplicon and RNA sequencing, to investigate genetic and molecular mechanisms.
  
• Conduct flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and 2D/3D cellular assays to characterise cardiomyocyte structure and function.
  
• Develop and implement innovative techniques for cardiac cell assessment and functional analysis.
  
• Contribute to experimental design, project strategy, literature reviews, manuscript preparation, grant writing, conference presentations, and research reporting.
  
• Collaborate effectively with research teams, support project delivery, propose new research initiatives, and supervise students and junior researchers.
  

Based at our modern offices at Perth Children's Hospital, thisposition is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 31 December 2028.

About You

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Molecular Biology,Cell Biology, Genetics or related discipline and/or proven experience in thefield.

The successful applicant will demonstrate knowledge and experiencein the following:

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary research teams and contribute to collaborative project outcomes.
  
• Experience in molecular and cell biology techniques, including tissue culture, with a strong interest in cardiomyocyte development and cardiac disease research.
  
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience in scientific manuscript preparation and grant writing.
  
• Ability to set goals, manage competing priorities, and consistently meet deadlines in a demanding research environment.
  
• Proven capacity to develop and implement new research methodologies and experimental approaches.
  
• Excellent planning, organisational, and laboratory skills, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
