Contract: Initial 12 months with 2 12-month extension options

The opportunity
Our Federal Government client is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to design and develop secure software solutions supporting complex mission systems.
You will collaborate with project managers, product owners, business analysts, architects, engineers and senior stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable and integrated applications.
The role covers multiple projects and requires strong software design capability, sound engineering judgement and experience delivering solutions within secure and highly regulated environments.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain software applications, systems and components.
- Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into effective software solutions.
- Design large or complex software components and interfaces.
- Evaluate alternative design options and technical trade-offs.
- Develop prototypes or simulations to support informed decision-making.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to improved code quality.
- Maintain and enhance existing systems through refactoring and defect resolution.
- Ensure applications satisfy security, performance, scalability and maintainability requirements.
- Contribute to solution architecture and technical design discussions.
- Troubleshoot production issues and undertake root-cause analysis.
- Ensure solutions comply with relevant architecture guidance, Defence policies and the Information Security Manual.
- Prepare and maintain technical, system and development documentation.
- Contribute to organisational software-design and architecture standards.
Essential requirements
- Demonstrated experience designing and developing complex software solutions.
- Strong software engineering and technical-design capability.
- Experience evaluating design options, risks and technical trade-offs.
- Experience developing secure, scalable and maintainable applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Experience conducting or participating in code and design reviews.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
- Experience producing clear technical documentation.
- Capability aligned with SFIA Software Design - SWDN Level 5.
- Australian citizenship.
- A current TSPV clearance, or a TSPV clearance held within the previous 12 months and subsequently downgraded.
A current Defence Intelligence Agency-recognised Psychological Assessment is preferred but not essential.
