About the Role
We are seeking a highly capable Health, Safety, Environment & Training (HSET) Manager to lead the development and delivery of Maules Creek Mine's HSET strategy, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, company standards and industry best practice.
Maules Creek Mine is Whitehaven Coal's flagship NSW operation and one of Australia's leading open cut coal mines. Located near Narrabri, the mine employs approximately 700 people and is approved to produce up to 13 million tonnes of coal annually.
Reporting to the General Manager and forming part of the Site Leadership Team, the HSET Manager leads a multidisciplinary team and plays a critical role in shaping the site's safety culture and operational performance. Working closely with leaders across the business, you will drive excellence in health, safety, environment and training through strong risk management, capability development, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the site's HSET strategy, management systems and overall performance
- Partner with leaders to strengthen safety culture, risk management and continuous improvement
- Ensure compliance with HSET legislation, environmental approvals and regulatory obligations
- Lead investigations, audits and assurance activities, driving effective corrective actions
- Oversee environmental, training, competency and workforce capability programs
- Manage occupational health, injury management, emergency preparedness and critical risk controls
- Build strong relationships with regulators, contractors and key stakeholders
- Manage HSET resources and budgets to deliver safe, compliant and cost-effective outcomes
What You’ll Bring

- Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, HR/Training or a related discipline
- Extensive leadership experience within Health, Safety, Environment and Training functions in mining, resources or other high-risk industries
- Strong knowledge of HSET legislation, including detailed understanding of NSW mining legislation and environmental approval frameworks
- Experience managing environmental monitoring programs, rehabilitation activities and regulatory reporting
- Proven success leading investigations, audits, assurance programs and continuous improvement initiatives
- Experience overseeing training and competency systems, learning management systems and statutory compliance requirements
- Excellent communication, analytical and decision-making skills
