Where you'll be working

This position is within the Northern Paediatric Training Network (NPTN) NSW. Our Network comprises a number of hospitals located across metropolitan, regional and rural settings.

Our base hospital is John Hunter Children's Hospital, a tertiary paediatric hospital located in Newcastle, NSW - a vibrant coastal city approximately two hours' drive north of Sydney. John Hunter Children's Hospital provides subspecialty and general multidisciplinary care for children with complex medical and surgical conditions. We are also a major trauma centre and home to the largest Level 4 surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in NSW.

Our other Network hospitals include Gosford/Wyong Hospitals and The Maitland Hospital.

What you'll be doing

Successful candidates will:

• Work alongside a diverse team of medical, nursing and allied health professionals.

• Practise effective, evidence-based paediatric medicine under the supervision of experienced senior clinicians.

• Further develop clinical skills and competence in a supportive training environment, including but not limited to:

  • Management of acute and chronic paediatric conditions.

  • Paediatric and neonatal procedures.

  • Facilitating multidisciplinary management.

  • Coordinating diagnostic investigations in consultation with other medical specialists.

  • Supporting continuity of care in the community following discharge.

• Contribute to a friendly, multidisciplinary team environment that reflects our CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment.

Responsibilities include

• Coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to the Children's Ward and Special Care Nursery/Unit, ensuring that assessments, treatment plans and clinical decisions are appropriately documented in the medical record.

• Undertaking the day-to-day assessment and management of patients within the allocated clinical unit and communicating effectively with patients and their families regarding their condition, treatment and ongoing care.

• Communicating and coordinating care with the multidisciplinary team, arranging consultation with other medical staff when appropriate, facilitating discharge planning, and liaising with local medical officers and community-based care providers.

• Contributing to the provision of outpatient paediatric services.

• Ensuring that all patient management decisions are made in consultation with the immediate supervisor and within the scope of delegated clinical responsibility.
