The Riverina Acute & Critical Care SRMO Program is an innovative, structured PGY3 training pathway designed to support the transition to Senior Resident Medical Officer and progression toward specialty training.
Delivered jointly by Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) and Calvary Riverina Hospital, the program provides a coordinated 12month rotational experience across a broad range of acute care settings within both the public and private healthcare sectors.
This position is aligned to the Acute Care & General Medicine Stream, offering rotations in:
- Emergency Medicine
- Anaesthetics
- Paediatrics
- Calvary-based registrar-level rotations in:
- Respiratory & Intensive Care
- General Medicine/Cardiology
- Cancer & Supportive Care (including Palliative Care, Medical Oncology and Haematology)
Rotations are allocated across the clinical year according to trainee interests and learning objectives, balanced with service requirements and rotation availability.
Calvary rotations provide unaccredited medical registrar-level clinical exposure under supervision, offering trainees the opportunity to develop senior clinical decision-making skills while remaining employed at the PGY3/SRMO level.
The program provides broad exposure to the assessment and management of acutely unwell and deteriorating patients across emergency, inpatient, chronic disease and end-of-life care settings, with experience spanning both public and private healthcare environments.
What you'll be doing
You will provide safe, patient-centred medical care under appropriate supervision within a high-acuity clinical environment across both WWBH and Calvary Riverina Hospital.
Through participation in a structured 12-month rotational program, you will:
- Develop core competencies in acute and critical care, including resuscitation, ventilation, vascular access, and recognition and escalation of clinical deterioration
- Build confidence in managing high-acuity presentations, including after-hours care and multidisciplinary decision-making
- Contribute to coordinated patient care through effective collaboration with medical, nursing and allied health teams
- Gain exposure to registrar-level responsibilities during Calvary rotations within a supported SRMO framework
- Develop clinical maturity, adaptability and systems-based understanding across public and private healthcare settings
- Engage in teaching, research and scholarly activity supported by local university partnerships
By completion of the program, you will have developed a strong clinical foundation to support progression into specialty training pathways, including acute medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthesia and rural generalist practice.
Where you'll be working
The Riverina Acute & Critical Care Program is delivered across Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) and Calvary Riverina Hospital, providing exposure to both public and private healthcare environments within a large regional referral network.
The Wagga Wagga Health Service has undergone a $431 million redevelopment, completed in 2021, and is one of the largest regional health campuses in New South Wales. The campus includes:
- A 325-bed referral hospital (WWBH) supporting over 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations each year
- A 24-hour Emergency Department with access to statewide specialist support via the Critical Care Advisory Service
- A purpose-built Health Services Hub offering integrated services including aged care, rehabilitation, mental health, outpatient and community health services, along with modern education and simulation facilities
- Co-located services including renal dialysis, oral health, allied health and expanded outpatient care
Wagga Wagga Health Service provides comprehensive services across critical care, medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics, rehabilitation, mental health and community health, supported by a broad range of specialist and allied health teams.
As part of the program, trainees will also rotate to Calvary Riverina Hospital, providing experience in a private healthcare setting and exposure to general medicine, respiratory/ICU and palliative care/oncology services. These rotations offer the opportunity to work in a complementary clinical environment, contributing to continuity of care across the region and providing insight into different models of healthcare delivery.

Wagga Wagga is the largest regional city in NSW with an urban population of over 60,000 residents, nestled on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River.
Wagga Wagga offers a myriad of activities to enjoy, including a wonderful selection of restaurants, cafes, markets and wineries, galleries and museums. It has terrific gradens and recreational areas and caters to both the cultural and sporting enthusiasts.
There are extensive education options from early childhood through to tertiary; including public and private primary and secondary schools, the TAFE NSW Riverina Institute, Charles Sturt University, The University of NSW Rural Clinical School, and The University of Notre Dame - Rural clinical School.
- MBBS or equivalent, with current registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate category
- Suitable for PGY3 and PGY4 applicants
- Demonstrated clinical experience within the Australian healthcare system, including exposure to acute care settings
- Evidence of ongoing participation in continuing medical education and professional development, including relevant courses such as ALS2, BASIC, EMST, APLS or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience or strong interest in acute and/or critical care, including exposure to the assessment and management of acutely unwell patients
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Demonstrated professionalism, adaptability and flexibility, with the ability to work across a range of clinical environments
- Willingness and capacity to participate in after-hours rosters, including evenings, weekends, Ward Nights and After Hours shifts as part of a 7-day rotating roster
- Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career pathway in acute care specialties such as Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, General Medicine or Rural Generalist practice
