About the role

We are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal team in Sydney.

Our Legal team plays a critical role in helping Stake move quickly with confidence. We partner closely with teams across Product, Engineering, Operations, Customer Success, Marketing, Finance and People to navigate complex legal and regulatory questions, unlock new opportunities and ensure we're building products that earn and keep our customers' trust.

As Legal Counsel, you'll become a trusted partner across the business. You'll advise on everything from new product launches and financial services regulation to commercial agreements and day-to-day operational matters. You'll thrive in a fast-moving environment where pragmatic advice, sound judgement and strong collaboration create real business impact.

You'll join a high-performing team that values ownership, curiosity and simplicity. You'll have the opportunity to influence how Stake grows while helping us navigate an evolving regulatory landscape. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

• Become a trusted legal partner to teams across Stake, helping us make better decisions with confidence and pace.
• Enable the successful launch and evolution of products by delivering practical, commercially minded legal advice that balances innovation with risk.
• Strengthen Stake's legal and regulatory foundations by proactively identifying emerging issues and helping the business stay ahead of change.
• Build trusted relationships with stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Operations, Marketing, Finance and People, becoming a go-to adviser for strategic and operational matters.
• Establish efficient legal processes, templates and ways of working that help the business move faster without compromising quality.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the Legal team by sharing knowledge, improving practices and helping raise the bar across the function.
• Manage external counsel effectively, ensuring specialist advice is commercially valuable and aligned with Stake's objectives.

You'll thrive here if...

• You have around 5+ years' post-admission experience, gained in a leading law firm, in-house, or a combination of both, with strong exposure to Australian financial services.
• You're confident advising on financial services regulation, corporate and commercial matters, and enjoy translating complex legal issues into practical business advice.
• You balance commercial thinking with sound legal judgement and know how to help teams move quickly while managing risk appropriately.
• You build trusted relationships easily and enjoy working alongside cross-functional teams to solve meaningful business problems.
• You're proactive, organised and comfortable managing competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
• You're curious, adaptable and motivated by helping build products and experiences that customers trust.

Bonus if you've ever

• Worked in a fintech or regulated financial services business.
• Advised on AFSL obligations, ASIC or AUSTRAC matters.
• Supported product launches in a highly regulated environment.
• Negotiated technology, SaaS or strategic commercial agreements.
• Worked with privacy law, including the Consumer Data Right (CDR).
• Helped improve legal operations through automation, playbooks or scalable processes.
