What you'll do

The Solution Architect will be an experienced engineering professional who provides technical leadership and support for capture and bids for the Sovereign Space Programmes team in the Eastern Hemisphere. Activities undertaken include generation of technical solutions within proposals and bids for a portfolio of opportunities spanning SATCOM, PNT, and emergent technologies in the space sector, and supporting technical inputs for the development of internal business cases. The person will work with other members of Viasat International Government team and with the wider technical resources of Viasat.

This is a full-time role based in Sydney but will involve occasional travel to customers or technology sites throughout the world.

Successful candidates must be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Secret Clearance (NV1).


The day-to-day

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop technical solutions for high value bids and capture proposals in the space domain including satellites and ground stations.
  • Work closely with Viasat engineering/technology teams based globally in shaping technical solutions and be the technical point of contact for Government facing space domain capture and bids in the Eastern hemisphere.
  • Develop technical content for bid/capture collateral such as technical briefs including architecture designs, proposals, presentations, bid/RFT response, business case material etc. based on customer requirements.
  • Lead technical meetings internally and with the customer, with the ability to develop engineering solutions, architectures, and make engineering decisions.
  • Present technical vision for developed solutions internally and to customers.
  • Support Director Sovereign Space Programmes for all capture initiatives in the Eastern hemisphere including supporting in meetings with potential customers or stakeholders.
  • Business Travel: 20-30%

Bid values range from $30M to $500M+

Outcomes in the next 12 months:

  • High success rate for bids/capture/rebids/contract growth opportunities for the Sovereign Space Programmes (East) team.
  • Increased technical collaboration with Viasat engineering/technology teams to enable Director, Sovereign Space Programmes (East) in launching two joint space/ground opportunities.
  • Compelling technical solutions/outputs to enable growth of qualified pipeline to $100m for Sovereign Space Programmes (East).

What you'll need

  • Essential Knowledge and Skills:

    • 5-10 years’ technical experience working within SATCOM / PNT sectors with 4-5 year's experience as a solutions architect.
    • Must be degree educated in an engineering discipline (mechanical, computer science, or similar).
    • Excellent knowledge of SATCOM in Civilian/ Defence Government markets.
    • Strong bid writing and presentation experience including the ability to produce and manage technical documentation.
    • Business development experience with extensive understanding of Systems Engineering, requirements management and a variety of project methodologies.

    • Broad based skills across a wide range of technologies covering equipment design, network design and service operation. Knowledge of spacecraft design and spacecraft operations is highly desirable.
    • Highly organised, detail oriented, self-motivated and strong interpersonal skills.
    • Critical thinking and relationship-building skills.
    • Flexible / resourceful approach and independent problem solver.
    • Confident and articulate with senior leaders.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

    • Professional Registration with a relevant Engineering/Science Institute, or equivalent body, as an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer.
    • MBA qualified.
    • Project and Product management experience.
    • Excellent knowledge of MS Office packages.
    • Knowledge of ISO-9001, ISO-45001 and ISO 14001
