We have a new and exciting opportunity for a Clinical Midwifery Educator (CME) to join our close-knit team to support our staff and mentor student midwives.

The role is a permanent position and can be fixed to suit you 0.8 - 1FTE. There is also the option to work a 7 day roster, mornings lates and nights.

The Role

We are seeking a skilled, passionate and motivated senior Midwife with the ability to work within all areas of the Maternity unit. Reporting to the Midwifery Services Unit Manager (MSUM), and working closely with our Clinical Maternity Unit Managers (MUMs) and Midwifery Educator (ME) the role will support the organisation over a wide range of education and development services including our new Graduate Diploma program.

We seek an experienced CME who can make a meaningful contribution to supporting excellence in clinical midwifery practice. The Clinical Midwife Educator is a pivotal position within the clinical area supporting evidence based practice and the development of the student and novice clinician.

The successful candidate will be capable of using advanced midwifery clinical skills, proven teaching methods and superior communication skills to drive improvement in education and evidence-based practice. They will be expected to develop meaningful connections with Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs), show initiative and flexibility in their approach to the role and have a high regard for professional and clinical standards. Demonstrated experience and success in preceptorship and other teaching roles will be highly regarded.

Newcastle Private Hospital is operated by Healthscope, a leading provider of private healthcare in Australia. Our Maternity service comprises of a 6 bed Birthing Suite, 38 bed Antenatal/Postnatal ward, 8 bed Special Care Nursery and is co-located on the John Hunter Campus at Rankin Park. The hospital has 189 beds and is a high acuity facility with 11 theatres, 15 bed ICU, cardiac suite, coronary care unit and oncology services.


As a Clinical Midwifery Educator your responsibilities may include:

Working with the MSUM and Midwifery Educator to support our commitment to high level education and training

Clinical support and facilitation of undergraduate and post graduate students of Midwifery programs

Facilitate the orientation and onboarding of new staff

Take on a leadership role in providing hands on educational support and clinical teaching to our clinical team, graduate midwives, and students

Assist with competency assessments, learning plans and in-service presentation

Promote a high standard of evidence-based midwifery care to all patients, through dissemination of current best practice knowledge

Ensure employee compliance to Mandatory Training requirements and completion of eLearning components

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in policy and procedure development, implementation and compliance

Essential Criteria:

Registered Midwife AHPRA registration

Extensive post registration clinical experience in midwifery, with no less than 6 years.

Demonstrated recent clinical experience in the birthing suite environment.

Certificate IV Workplace Assessment & Training (TAE) or working towards

Experience teaching and supervising students and novice midwives

Strong preceptorship and mentoring skills

Excellent interpersonal, customer service & communication skills

Demonstrated quality improvement activities and policy review/development skills

Intermediate computer skills

Hold a Valid NSW Working with Children Check(WWCC) for employment

Desirable Criteria:

Previous CME experience

Masters in Midwifery/Education

Demonstrated innovation in education program design and delivery using evidence-based practices
