Overnight News Editor

The i Paper is seeking an experienced news editor to lead its digital operation overnight in GMT, writing, editing and promoting stories that offer deep insight into the biggest news of the day.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join The i Paper as it builds its audience through ambitious news exclusives and revelatory reporting. This is a vital role where the right candidate can help to shape the strategic development of The i Paper's 24 hour news and opinion operation.
The successful candidate must have proven experience of managing fast-moving stories, as well as an innovative mindset to expand our digital storytelling through a variety of formats aimed at boosting engagement with our journalism.
This role is at the heart of The i Paper's busy news operation and requires a supreme multi-tasker with impeccable news judgement, an eye for detail and a cool head.
Main Responsibilities
- To take sole charge of The i Paper's digital output overnight GMT, responsible for reacting to breaking news, writing explainers and analysis and keeping The i Paper's content fresh and engaging.
- To commission sharp reactive takes in line with The i Paper's core topics from a pool of global comment writers in response to developing news.
- To help shape The i Paper's 24/7 strategy, developing new ways to drive engagement and grow our subscriber audience overnight.
- To take on sole ownership of editing The i Paperhomepage, manning our social media channels, and where needed sending breaking news alerts and emails, ensuring our best journalism is presented and promoted in the most impactful way.
- To write a daily newsletter, The Early Edition, bringing The i Paper's subscribers the most interesting take on the top stories of the day in their inboxes first thing in the morning GMT.
- To provide a through handover to The i Paper's London team on rolling stories including suggestions for moving stories on, angles to chase or breakouts that differentiate our coverage from other media outlets.
Person Specification
- Proven news editing experience for a national news publisher or broadcaster, with strong news judgement
- An ability to take on a high degree of responsibility and work alone
- Strong skills in copy and headline writing and editing, and an ability to publish stories to deadline - plus embrace new methods of storytelling
- Incisive analytical skills and the ability to approach the news agenda in a creative and original manner
- An ability to understand and digest data from audience analytics and digital tools and use that to drive decision making and publishing of overnight stories
- Strong knowledge of the UK news agenda, in particular UK politics
- A thorough understanding of media law and the UK Editors' Code of Conduct (IPSO)
- A commitment to The i Paper's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage
- The ability to identify when it is appropriate to engage the wider news desk in the event of major breaking news
