Operational Transport Modeller
Joining Arup
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world
Arup's Victorian Transport Planning team partners with public and private clients to optimise transport network performance and shape better outcomes for people and places. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing operational modelling capability within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. You will support a diverse range of projects by analysing network performance, testing design and operational scenarios, and translating data into clear, actionable insights for varied audiences. Reporting to the Victorian Transport Planning Team Leader, you will focus on developing and applying operational models-particularly microsimulation using tools such as PTV Vissim-while building strong technical, analytical and consulting skills. This role suits someone passionate about real-world transport systems and their interaction across modes and land uses. Experience in microsimulation is highly regarded; however, candidates with broader transport modelling, traffic engineering or planning experience, and strong data analytics skills (e.g. Excel, Power BI, GIS, Python, R), are encouraged to apply.
The Opportunity
- Develop and apply operational transport models, with a focus on microsimulation and network performance analysis.
- Prepare, calibrate and validate models using relevant traffic, public transport, active travel and land use data.
- Undertake scenario testing to evaluate the impacts of infrastructure, policy, design and operational changes.
- Analyse and interpret model outputs to generate clear, actionable insights on network performance and user outcomes.
- Produce high-quality technical inputs, visualisations and summaries for reports, presentations and client engagement.
- Collaborate with planners, engineers and designers to translate modelling outcomes into practical solutions.
- Contribute to transport studies and projects while managing tasks, maintaining quality standards and meeting deadlines.
Is this role right for you?
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in civil engineering, transport engineering, transport planning, urban planning, data analytics or a related discipline.
- Up to 5 years of demonstrated experience in transport modelling, traffic engineering, transport planning or a similar analytical role.
- Experience in microsimulation modelling (e.g. PTV Vissim) is highly regarded.
- Exposure to transport modelling or traffic analysis tools such as PTV Visum, Cube, EMME, SIDRA, Aimsun, Paramics or similar is advantageous.
- Strong interest in transport network operations, including intersections, corridors, public transport and active travel.
- Experience working with transport data, technical reporting and visualisation tools is desirable.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to interpret data and convey insights clearly.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and manage tasks to meet deadlines.
- A proactive, professional approach, with a willingness to learn, seek feedback and build technical capability.
- Annual salary base for this role range $80,000 to $95,000 + superannuation.
