The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Provisional Fellow. You will be part of a supportive, collegiate department, consisting of 40 VMO Specialists and 14 Registrars. You will have opportunity to both work under supervision and run your own lists, supervising juniors. There will be the opportunity to consolidate your anaesthesia practice across the spectrum, as well as pursuing special interests. Opportunities exist to be part of ongoing research and quality projects.

About Tweed Valley Hospital

This is an exciting opportunity to joinTweed Valley Hospital,your primary work location and a new, major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed-Byron region, also includingMurwillumbah District&Byron CentralHospitals. The 723.3 million state-of-the-art hospital opened on 14 May 2024 and will deliver additional health services and bed capacity to meet the growing community's healthcare needs.

The primary purpose of a Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia is to provide safe and high quality Anaesthetic services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in Anaesthesia practice, in a complex clinical environment within inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisation. The position allows the development of skills required for in dependent practice and the opportunity to acquire subspecialist experience in a variety of areas including regional anaesthesia and simulation. Non-clinical sessions are available for education, research and administrative and leadership roles as appropriate.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee's skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia is expected to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills, including:

  • Anaesthesia and sedation
  • Regional anaesthesia
  • Simulation training and education
  • Airway management
  • Pain medicine
  • Perioperative medicine
  • Resuscitation
  • Trauma and crisis management


This position offers an excellent program and pathway for senior trainees to transition into consultant practice. Special emphasis is placed on developing clinical autonomy, organisational skills, administrative and rostering requirements and supervision of junior trainees.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role, which meet the ANZCA criteria to fill a Provisional Fellow position (please address these in your response).
  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  4. Demonstrated advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
  5. Demonstrated advanced organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
