The primary purpose of a Provisional Fellow (Trainee) in Regional Anaesthetics is to provide anaesthesia care in a complex clinical environment, with a focus on increasing Regional Anaesthesia skillset including follow up via the Acute Pain Service (APS). This will be done under supervision appropriate to the level of training of the applicant and in line with recommendations of the training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Trainees are expected to extend their knowledge and skills in managing anaesthesia across multiple subspeciality areas of anaesthetics in order to meet the professional standards set by ANZCA. They are required to deliver anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms and to perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed.
The Provisional Fellow (PF) will have completed a minimum of four years of accredited anaesthesia training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or equivalent and will have passed the Final Australian College Fellowship Examination or equivalent. The applicant must be registered with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
The Department of Anaesthesia provides a high-quality Acute Pain Service and has a high regional anaesthesia demand, providing 2290 regional anaesthesia episodes per year.
Trainees will participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics including:
anaesthesia and sedation (including obstetric anaesthesia)
regional anaesthesia
airway management
pain medicine
perioperative medicine
resuscitation
trauma and crisis management
Port Macquarie Base Hospital is currently accredited for 24 months of ANZCA training and is a 195-bed, role delineation level 5, public teaching hospital servicing a growing population of approximately 215,000. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of surgical activities including a busy vascular unit, advanced general including liver, upper GI and colorectal surgery, complex laparoscopic and general urology, ENT (Adult and Paediatric), dental, maxillofacial, orthopaedic, O&G, ophthalmology, cardiology, ERCP and interventional radiology services.
Port Macquarie Base Hospital has a 16-bed intensive care unit providing treatment and support for critically ill medical and surgical patients, staffed by consultant specialists and dedicated ICU trainees.
Diagnostic facilities include on-site CT scanning, MRI and pathology services.
The Hospital provides immediate support to Kempsey District Hospital and Wauchope District Memorial Hospital. Royal North Shore Hospital is the default tertiary hos pital for critical care, neurosurgical, burns and spinal services. John Hunter Hospital is the default regional trauma centre.
UNSW and CSU campuses are located in Port Macquarie. Port Macquarie Base Hospital actively supports medical research and the successful applicant will have the opportunity of actively participating in research and QA activities.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Must have fellowship/ minimum 4 years anaesthetic experience and be eligible for Provisional Fellowship training. If overseas trained, must have completed the ANZCA SIMG assessment process or the Medical Board of Australia Expedited Specialist Pathway. Must be registered with ANZCA.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
- Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as partvof a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills.
