Executive Manager People Compliance
- Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane Location.
- Hybrid working arrangement.
Join the People Governance, Risk & Compliance team - where governance meets meaningful impact.
What's the role?
Our People Governance, Risk & Compliance team plays a critical role in helping Westpac manage People Risk and meet Employment Obligations across all jurisdictions in which we operate. We strengthen the way employment law obligations are identified, managed, monitored and evidenced, while providing practical guidance, transparent oversight and meaningful reporting that supports confident decision-making by leaders and stakeholders across the Group.
This is a role for an experienced risk and compliance professional who can operate with confidence in a complex, regulated environment.
This role will suit someone who has deep experience interpreting and applying employment laws, industrial instruments and policy requirements, and who can translate complex legal and regulatory requirements into, practical guidance for senior stakeholders. It is not an entry-level compliance role. You will need to bring strong judgement, confidence working with ambiguity, and the ability to influence across the Three Lines of Defence.
In this role, you'll:
- Be the go-to advisor: provide proactive, commercially-minded compliance and governance advice on People Risk and employment obligations-turning complexity into plain-English actions.
- Lead core compliance rhythms: execute BAU compliance activities (e.g., reviews, monitoring, issue/incident triage) and drive timely closure of actions to strengthen control effectiveness.
- Deliver trusted insights: prepare clear reporting, executive-ready papers and meaningful risk insights for forums, committees and senior stakeholders.
- Connect the ecosystem: partner closely with Compliance, Risk, Payroll, Learning and broader business stakeholders to embed effective governance practices and uplift compliance capability across the organisation.
- Improve what matters: identify emerging risk trends and enhance processes, controls, tooling, and ways of working to improve efficiency, visibility and compliance outcomes.
- Support strategic uplift: contribute to the ongoing evolution of employment obligations governance, monitoring and risk management practices across the Group.
What do I need:
You'll be an experienced risk professional who can step into a senior role and add value quickly. You will bring strong technical knowledge, excellent stakeholder judgement, and the ability to design, embed and sustain practical compliance frameworks in a complex organisation. To be successful, you'll need:
- Experience interpreting and applying employment laws, industrial instruments, employment obligations and/or People policy in a professional or corporate environment.
- Demonstrated experience in compliance management, obligations management, controls, monitoring, issue management and executive reporting.
- Strong knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory environments, with the ability to provide plain-English advice to business stakeholders.
- Strong change management experience, including embedding and sustaining regulatory or compliance change (financial services preferred).
- The ability to operate in a greenfield or evolving environment - designing fit-for-purpose frameworks, processes and controls rather than relying on established playbooks.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear reporting, committee papers and practical guidance.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical capability, prioritisation skills and an outcomes-focused mindset.
- Strong stakeholder management experience with the ability to influence and partner with senior leaders.
- Experience supporting or operating within a first line risk environment.
- Experience with IBM OpenPages (or similar) risk management systems.
