Duties & Responsibilities:

Mission

The Division of Acute Care Surgical Services within the Department of Surgery is committed to advancing the science and practice of trauma, emergency general surgery (EGS), and surgical critical care. Our mission includes providing exceptional patient care, conducting impactful research, and training the next generation of leaders in Acute Care Surgery. The Division fosters a culture of scholarly activity and professional development and contributes meaningfully to the university and broader surgical community.

Position Summary

This position serves as a clinical provider with a rank of Instructor and AAST Acute Care Surgery Fellow, a junior, term, nontenure track faculty role designed to provide advanced training in trauma, EGS, and surgical critical care. The fellow will participate in the full scope of the AASTverified curriculum, including operative experience, critical care management, elective rotations, and scholarly activity. The role integrates clinical practice, teaching, and research responsibilities consistent with the mission of the Division.

Candidates should have clinical interests aligned with Acute Care Surgery and a commitment to developing expertise in trauma and EGS operative management. Research interests may include outcomes, basic science, translational research, or quality improvement.

Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Provide instruction and supervision to residents, fellows, and students in trauma, EGS, and surgical critical care.
  • Participate in structured educational activities, including weekly case conferences, M&M, and simulationbased training.
  • Contribute to the academic mission through bedside teaching and formal didactics.

Clinical

  • Deliver clinical care to trauma and acute care surgery patients at the MCV campus and affiliated community hospitals.
  • Participate fully in the AAST ACS Fellowship curriculum, including operative trauma, EGS, critical care, and required elective rotations.
  • Develop and maintain an active surgical practice with mentorship from Division and Department leadership.
  • Gain extensive operative experience in trauma and EGS, with progressive autonomy appropriate to a boardeligible surgeon.

Research

  • Engage in scholarly activity consistent with AAST fellowship requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing research projects or develop independent research initiatives.
  • Present findings at regional or national meetings and contribute to peerreviewed publications.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery
  • Completion of an ACGMEaccredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship
  • Eligibility for Virginia medical licensure
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior clinical teaching experience
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity, including publications or grant submissions
  • Commitment to ongoing clinical, translational, or outcomesbased research
