Description

Canopius is looking to appoint a Senior Claims Manager, Australia & Pacific to lead the local claims operation and support the continued development of the Australia claims function in line with the growth of the business.
The role will be based in Sydney and report to the Country Head of Australia and New Zealand and the Head of Claims, APAC, with responsibility for oversight of the Australia claims portfolio on a national basis.
This role requires an experienced claims professional who can combine technical claims expertise with strong leadership, commercial judgement and market-facing capability. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing local claims capability, strengthening claims governance, and ensuring the claims function continues to support Canopius' underwriting strategy, broker relationships and service proposition in Australia.
The role will suit someone who is comfortable operating in a growing and entrepreneurial environment, can work autonomously and collaboratively, and is able to build effective relationships with underwriters, brokers, coverholders, DCAs, TPAs, service providers and internal stakeholders. The successful candidate should be operationally strong, pragmatic, and able to help scale the claims function while maintaining high standards of technical quality, control and customer service.

  • Minimum 10 years of insurance claims experience in commercial claims, with proven leadership experience.

  • Exposure to multiple lines of business, with strong claims management capability and technical knowledge across relevant commercial lines, including Property, Casualty, Energy, Marine and Professional Lines.

  • Experience managing complex, high-value or strategically important claims.

  • Strong understanding of the Australian insurance market, broker expectations and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to provide practical claims insight to underwriting, actuarial and senior stakeholders.

  • Experience overseeing DCAs, TPAs, coverholders or outsourced claims service providers would be advantageous.

  • Ability to identify, attract, develop and retain talent.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing skills.

  • Good analytical capability, including claims MI, portfolio trends and reserving movements.

  • ACII, ANZIIF or equivalent would be an advantage.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.

  • Lead the day-to-day Australia claims operation, ensuring claims are handled efficiently, fairly and in line with Canopius' claims values.
  • Lead, manage and develop the local claims team, including performance management, coaching, capability development, resourcing, recruitment and onboarding.
  • Support the growth of the Australia claims function by developing local in-house capability alongside the existing delegated claims model, and help shape the operating model as the portfolio grows.
  • Maintain strong claims governance across the Australia portfolio, including authority management, file quality, reserving discipline, complaints, regulatory compliance and adherence to the Claims Manual.
  • Oversee the Australia claims portfolio and personally handle or supervise complex, high-value or strategically important claims where required, ensuring material claims issues are escalated appropriately.
  • Ensure claims are properly reserved, actively managed and progressed from notification through to resolution, including interim payments, settlement and closure.
  • Provide clear and practical claims insight to underwriting, actuarial and management through MI, portfolio reviews, monthly tracking meetings, quarterly reserving discussions and other management reporting.
  • Oversee DCAs, TPAs, coverholders and outsourced claims service providers, including service standards, authority compliance, MI, complaints, audit actions, escalation and remediation.
  • Build strong working relationships with brokers, coverholders, insureds and other external stakeholders, and represent Canopius' claims proposition in the Australian market, including travel as required to support broker, client, coverholder and business engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders including underwriting, actuarial, finance, outwards reinsurance, CAT management, risk, compliance, operations, HR and other claims teams.
  • Support the implementation of the claims strategy in Australia and contribute to claims-related projects, operational initiatives and practical improvements to processes, controls, data quality, efficiency and customer and broker service outcomes.
