Casualty Underwriter
Description
The Casualty Underwriter plays a key role in the profitable and sustainable growth of the Australia and New Zealand Casualty portfolio. This position is responsible for underwriting single-risk business, managing delegated authority arrangements, and building strong broker and client relationships, while operating within defined underwriting authorities and regulatory requirements.
The role is suited to an experienced Casualty Underwriter with strong technical capability, commercial acumen, and an understanding of the Lloyd's market model.

Proven underwriting experience in Casualty lines within the Australian market.
Demonstrated experience underwriting General Liability (Primary, Umbrella, and Excess).
Prior experience with binders or delegated authority arrangements preferred.
Experience working within a Lloyd's syndicate environment highly regarded.
Strong understanding of underwriting strategy, portfolio management, and risk selection.
Ability to balance growth objectives with disciplined risk assessment and profitability.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Attention to detail with a consistent focus on data quality and file integrity.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to build trust-based relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders.
Confident engaging in technical discussions and commercial negotiations.
Strong IT capability, particularly Microsoft Excel and underwriting systems.
Tertiary qualifications or professional insurance accreditation desirable.
Highly organised, methodical, and commercially minded.

Underwriting & Portfolio Management
Underwrite Open Market Casualty risks (New Business, Renewals, and Endorsements) across General Liability, including Primary, Umbrella, and Excess layers.
Manage a portfolio of single-risk business, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority limits, and pricing discipline.
Own and manage delegated authority (binder/facility) relationships, including referrals, day-to-day underwriting decisions, and renewal negotiations.
Provide clear, commercially sound referrals with recommendations when risks fall outside delegated authority.
Maintain accurate, complete, and compliant underwriting files and risk records within required service timelines.
Governance, Compliance & Controls
Ensure full compliance with internal underwriting standards, Lloyd's minimum standards, regulatory obligations, and internal audit requirements.
Develop a working knowledge of the Lloyd's of London operating model, including policies, systems, premium booking, and credit control processes.
Monitor underwriting activity and workloads to ensure timely processing, quality decision-making, and adherence to agreed KPIs.
Broker, Client & Market Engagement
Develop, maintain, and strengthen productive relationships with brokers and key clients across Australia.
Proactively identify and pursue new business opportunities that align with portfolio strategy and profitability targets.
Actively manage renewals, including forward planning, broker engagement, and negotiation strategy.
Leverage existing broker relationships to drive portfolio growth and cross-sell opportunities where commercially appropriate.
Internal Collaboration & Contribution
Liaise effectively with Underwriting Support, Delegated Authority, Operations, Finance, and other internal stakeholders to ensure efficient underwriting outcomes.
Support cross-class collaboration on selected opportunities where profitability and risk appetite align.
Contribute to underwriting team governance activities, including preparation of meeting agendas, minutes, and action tracking.
Actively support and promote Diversity & Inclusion initiatives across the business and within the APAC region.
